Flora And Fauna

Ladakh has an extremely cold climate, and rocky and uneven terrain, the reason why? vegetation is poor. Only a few valleys are fertile where some floral species can be sighted. Wild roses, willow groves and some herbs are some of the floral species found here. In spite of the low temperature and rocky terrain, Ladakh is quite rich in fauna. The avian species recorded here are 225 in number. Species of finches, robins, redstarts, and the Hoopoe are commonly spotted in summer. Water birds found here are the Ruddy Sheldrake and Bar-headed Goose. The Black-necked Crane, a rare species, can also be spotted here. Some of the animals found in Ladakh are Yak, Nyan (the largest sheep in the world), Bharal, the blue sheep and the Urial (the smallest sheep in the world), marmots, ibex, snow leopards, hare and Tibetan Sand Fox.

In the summers, the temperature of Ladakh ranges from? -3?C to? 30?C. The winters are extremely cold with temperature ranging from 15?C to -20 ?C.

The best time to visit Ladakh is from June to October.

How To Reach

By Air: The domestic airport at Leh connects Ladakh with Indian cities like Delhi, Chandigarh and Srinagar.

By Road: The Srinagar-Leh road is the most common land route to Ladakh. This route remains open from June to November. The other route to Ladakh is the Manali-Leh road with a stretch of 473 km. It remains open from mid-July to mid-October. Both the routes offer picture perfect views of the enchanting snow-capped mountains.
