The Trekkers' Paradise

The highlands of Ladakh offer the most pleasurable as well as challenging adventure sports. Trekking is one of them. Ladakh or “The Little Tibet” is known for some of the most picturesque and challenging treks in India. Trekking in Ladakh offers wonderful views of the remote mountain beauty and Buddhist culture including the great monasteries and picturesque villages of the Indus Valley. This region of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is simply a paradise for trekkers and adventure lovers on the world's mightiest mountain ranges of the great Himalayas, Karakoram and Zanskar.

Ladakh offers two types of trekking routes. One consisting of short and day long walks that are perfect for sightseeing of various monuments, monastic settlements, etc. and the other long trek lasting from a few days to a few weeks, which are known as trans-mountain treks.

While trekking through this spectacular landscape one needs to cross the Stok La (4836m) to the base of Stok Kangri, which is a delightful experience. Various patterns of wildlife including Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Marmots, Lammergeier Vultures and Golden Eagles are commonly seen on this pass. Early June to mid October is considered the peak season for trekking in Ladakh.

The famous trek routes of Ladakh are:

Chadar trek that takes you to Zanskar through the frozen Zanskar River.

Nubra Valley trek, along the eastern ridge of the Karakoram Range, comprising of the upper Shyok and Nubra river valleys.

Pangong Lake Circuit

Tso Moriri Lake circuit

Lamayuru (Indus Valley) to Darcha (Lahoul)

Markha Valley trek

Lamayuru-Padum trek

Stok-Khangri round trek

Trekking in Ladakh offers a glimpse of the towering mountains, hi-altitude snow deserts, extensive plateaus, wooded valleys, meandering rivers and placid lakes.
