Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Deriving its name from the mythological figure Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama, Bharatpur earned international fame because of its attractions. Today the city is famous the world over for its Keoladeo Ghana National Park, which is a bird paradise. The city of Bharatpur was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD. At one point of time Bharatpur was the main Jaat state of Rajasthan. The fascinating attractions of Bharatpur make it an important destination on the itinerary of the tourists coming to Rajasthan from across the globe.


Attractions Of Bharatpur

Keoladeo Ghana National Park
Home to around 230 species of birds, Keoladeo Ghana National Park attracts visitors from all over the world. It is the perfect place where you can treat your eyes to the sights of colourful and beautiful birds including the endangered species such as the Siberian Crane. The migratory birds from Europe, Siberia, China and Tibet flock to this Park during the winters and make it their temporary home. The Park also shelters a wide variety of mammals and reptiles. This Park was formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and is also a World Heritage Site.


Lohagarh Fort(Iron Fort)
The symbol of victory, Lohagarh Fort was built by the founder of Bharatpur Maharaja Surajmal when he won the battle against the Mughals and the British. The fort is an amazing fusion of the Mughal and Rajput architecture. It was one of the most fortified forts during the age of Raja-Maharaja. It was protected by deep moats on all sides. The fort houses some fabulous monuments such as Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal, Kothi Khas, Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj.


Banke Bihari Temple
Offering a peaceful and blissful aura, the Banke Bihari Temple in Bharatpur is flocked by many devotees throughout the year. The temple is known for its arresting architecture and beautiful idols of Lord Krishna and other deities.


Government Museum
The glorious history of Bharatpur can be best seen in its Government Museum. Built beautifully, the museum houses a rich collection of antiques, exquisite sculptures and ancient inscriptions. Displaying the precious possessions of the royal past, the museum is a must-see attraction of Bharatpur. It is located in the centre of the Lohagarh fort.
