Rajaji National Park


Known for offering ample opportunities to tourists to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and wildlife, Rajaji National Park is a famous wildlife destination in Uttaranchal. Situated along the hills and foothills of Shiwalik ranges in the Himalayan foothills, it represents the Shiwalik eco-system. This national park spans over a huge area of 820 sq. km which encompasses Rajaji, Chilla and Motichur wildlife sanctuaries, some parts of Dehradun, Lansdowne and Siwalik Forest Divisions.

These sanctuaries were combined in the year 1983 to Rajaji National Park. The park was named after the Late Raja Gopal Chariya. The majestic Ganges slowly flows through the park for a distance of 24 km. Apart from this, the numerous streams and brooks also make it rich and diverse.


Wildlife in Rajaji National Park

The Rajaji National Park boasts of around 23 species of mammals and a variety of animals. Jackal, Leopard, Asian Elephant, Indian Hare, Bengal Tiger, Wild Cat, Sambar, Barking Deer, Sloth Bear and Indian Langur.

Reptiles that can be seen in the park include Common Cobra, Common Lizard, King Cobra, Monitor Lizard and Python.

The park also is home to around 315 species of birds. These include Kingfisher, Barbet, Peafowl, Woodpecker, Pheasant and many other migratory birds.


Flora

The park is famous for rich and varied flora that makes it a perfect destination for wildlife lovers.
There are different types of forests including Sal Forest, Scrub Forest, Sub-tropical Pine Forest, Mixed Forest, Riverine Forest and Grassland.


Other Attractions

Rajaji National Park is surrounded by the prime cities of Uttar Pradesh. These include Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun, which hold great religious importance.


Getting around in the park

Jeep Safari is the easiest way to discover the forests of Rajaji National Park. These safaris are conducted for offering tourists the opportunity to see closely the wildlife.

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun.
By Rail: Nearest railhead is located at Haridwar/Rishikesh.

There are several forest rest houses available within the park. Residing there, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the park at its best. Eco-friendly cottages are also available at Wild Brook Retreat close to the Gohari range of Rajaji National Park.
